Great job man. I’ve heard so many horror stories about the iphone TomTom app I was afraid to buy it. But the app just went on sell for the holidays so I needed a review on it and your review was good enough proke me to spend my hard earned cash. Thanks

its an auto update through the app store. just go into the app store and it should be under the ‘updates’ section.

dude did you gel your hair just for this clip?

That is not entirely accurate. I work with TomTom for this, and the description does note that it is not required for the 3g/3gs, however that does not mean it does not help. The car kit does in fact offer enhanced GPS reception for 3g/3gs users.

I just downloaded the latest 1.2v and after it finished it didn’t want to re-boot. I reset the iphone and….nothing! So I deleted tomtom from the iphone and sync with iTunes and….it worked. Just had a play with it and your so right it’s so much refreshed and is quicker. The lane images is for me the best feature as sometimes with left and right I still need to think and seeing a picture is just easy to follow:-) Again, enjoyed you view:-)

Was you using the car kit or just the iphone stand-alone with the enhancer on?

    Thanks

ohh dude I just read on the description on the itunes store that the tom tom car kit is mostly meant for iphone 1st gen because it has no gps receiver it says the 3g and 3G S though do not require it because they already have gps built in go on the itunes and itll say that in the description !! that’s stupid I thought it would help better reception well good thing I didn’t buy it

I use navigon and its probably in my opinion the best plus the ipod controls !!

It’s not obvious but for Text to Speech you must select a Computer voice. I suspect with this update I will gravitate more to the use of the TomTom app but I wouldn’t wish to put anyone off either of the other apps I mentioned in my previous comment as I have found them to be more than capable.

Initially 1.2 repeatedly crashed on my 3G. Deleting and reinstalling the app resolved the problem. No problem updating my 3GS.
I also use Navigon and Sygic apps but have to say that for me, TomTom has a better “feel” and layout. Having said that I have just purchased the Sygic Australia and New Zealand app which is much cheaper than the TT apps.
For many the lack of live traffic information may remain a drawback as may be the inability to upload “safety camera” and other 3rd party POI data.

I use navigon, I tried copilot it has nice features but around where I live street names are wrong. Tomtom is nice but the routing is not that good.

what do u think about Navigon or Sygic … is TomTom better then those?

  19. by theunits3, on March 31 2010 @ 8:26 pm

I did use the GPS enhancement feature but I couldnt really tell as the signal was good without it anyway. I guess it willbe handy in some areas where there is poor signals.

    Nice one.

I really appreciate your very thorough and detailed review of each improvement of each feature. For me I prefer a separate nav system so I can take calls and still have the nav system guiding me on my route while I talk on the phone. If the iPhone apps can provide all the features of the “top-of-the-line” nav systems for $34-$99 then I will have to reconsider. But for now separate devices. Apple where is multitasking?

So what does the enhancement GPS do? Have you tried using it with and without this feature turned on?
BTW I use the Navigon app.
