Online Artillery (subtitled Medieval Multi-player Fortress Siege) takes an aggressive approach to iPhone online gaming by only pitting the player against online opponents. The online battles are generally fun and challenging, however, Online Artillery needs a bit more polish before it can be truly recommended.
Playing the game requires setting up a new account with Online Artillery. This feels a bit redundant given there are good third-party options like Open Feint for handling this task; although it may not give the developer as much control over tracking the leaderboards. Hopefully the iPhone Game Center will streamline multiplayer gaming for the iPhone/iPod touch platform through one account.
The game play is fairly solid. The object is to destroy your enemy’s castle with enormous cannon. Making a direct shot is contingent upon positioning the angle of the cannon and accounting for the wind and distance to the target. Three direct hits destroy the castle. There are over 30 different maps that will place one or more of the castles on a hill or hidden in a valley to differentiate the challenge. Apps come in all shapes and sizes. With the number of simple, light-function apps out there, developers were bound to find ways to pack them all into one multipurpose app. From this we have the all-in-one apps; apps that provide a wide range of function for a small price. These apps include nice utilities like flashlights, alarm clocks, and battery life detectors. But they also carry a lot of random junk that don’t really have any use or function other than providing entertainment. So are they worth purchasing, and if so how do you pick the one that will be most useful to you? I’ll fill you in on the top three all-in-one apps and you can decide on whether or not to get one. Here are my impressions of these apps:
App Dragon-50 in 1
This app includes many useful utilities like a protractor, a money converter, and a tip calculator, among others. It also comes with a ton of Google stuff so you can view google docs, use google chat, and use google translator. However, it also comes with a page-worth of useless apps that don’t do anything. For example, there’s the cooler app which makes the screen show the inside of a refrigerator freezing over. To me it seems that App Dragon is a decent balance between function and entertainment.
90-in-1: APPZILLA!
By far the largest of the all-in-one apps, Appzilla has a number of useful apps. It can access google docs and gmail, as well as other google applications. Appzilla also includes many basic utility apps like a tip calculator and a currency converter. However, it includes many functions that are only helpful in very specific situations. I have experience as a musician and find the metronome useful, but I doubt the same is true for most people. And the same thing goes for a teslameter (I don’t see any reason to believe that the average app user would ever find himself or herself in the position where he or she needs to measure a magnetic field).
AppBox Pro
The smallest of the three all-in-one apps, AppBox Pro includes the least of the entertaining but useless apps. It includes the utilities common to this genre of apps (flashlight, currency converter, etc.). It comes with a set of google apps just as its competitors. I like this one because it cuts out the useless apps and as a result becomes a very useful and functional multipurpose tool. The thing I don’t like about this app is that it’s not quite as aesthetically pleasing as the other two apps. To be honest, I think the neon sign scheme makes it look a little…cheap.
